There’s Something About Spring in Boulder

There’s Something About Spring in Boulder

boulder flatirons your boulder

I have to tell you — there really is something about spring in Boulder.

It’s better than summer and fall. After this winter, it’s for damn sure better than winter. And I dig it.

I love how I can head out and stroll along Pearl Street and feel a gentle breeze sweep in. I love the way birds seem to serenade me as I’m on a bike ride along the north section of Broadway. I love how the mud is beginning to turn into something you can ride a moutain bike on and how I’ll have to bid my cross bike adieu until the next season.

I love the way the sky sweeps across the background of every view I take in, as if it’s saying, “No really — look all you want. There’s more where that came from.” I love the view from atop Mt. Sanitas, no matter the weather.

Boulder County Farmers Market is OPEN!

Boulder County Farmers Market is OPEN!

boulder county farmers market

This means that spring is really here, right? No more freak snow. No more icy sidewalks unless your son just happened to have dropped a popsicle.

It’s official: the Boulder County Farmers Market is OPEN for 2014! And yeah, we missed the grand opening by a few weeks (we’ve been traveling, writing about BBQ…you know, important stuff). But if you missed it like we did, it’s time to grab those reusable shopping totes and head on down this Saturday to the Boulder County Farmers Market. There’s good gettin’ to be gotten and it’s just the beginning of the season.

If you’re new to Boulder, you can hit up the farmers market every Saturday from 8AM until 2PM. There’s also a sister farmers market in Longmont held on Saturdays from 8AM to 1PM. The Boulder location is on 13th Street between Arapahoe and Canyon, adjacent to Boulder’s Central Park. The Longmont market is held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds on Nelson Road. You can check out hours, locations, and maps right here.

And if you’re wondering about the kinds of treasures you can expect to find at the market, you can see an entire list of this year’s vendors right on the farmers market website. They list everything from the vendor’s name to the vendor’s website if they have one. This way, you can do a little pre-sleuthing prior to your trip, plot your shopping trip, and see if your favorite vendors have returned for the 2014 season.

And parking can be a beast for farmers market days. We recommend walking and bikes, but you can also park in one of the many City of Boulder parking facilities. Just note that you will be paying the ful parking rate because lots aren’t free on Saturdays.

We’ll see you at the market! Happy shopping.

The Best Places to Watch the Super Bowl inBoulder

The Best Places to Watch the Super Bowl inBoulder

superbowl boulder 2014

Yes, the two states that legalized weed have made it to Super Bowl XLVIII. On February 2nd, the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks will finally face off. And even though we know who’s going to win, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the game with some big-screen TV’s, good food, and craft beer, right? If your thinking about leaving the couch at home and going out for the Big Game, make sure to check out some of the local Boulder hotspots below.

FATE Brewing Company

Only one year old and already named the best new restaurant in Boulder in a recent Daily Camera poll, FATE is a shoe-in for one of the best spots to enjoy the Big Game. They have 10 TVs in the dining area and bar so you’ll be sure to catch all of the action no matter where you sit. For food they’ll be featuring two competing burgers specifically made to represent each of the competing teams. They will also have Happy Hour prices all day for draft beer and well drinks. Also, if you happen to be a lost Seahawks fan wandering around Boulder constantly looking over your shoulder, you’ll be happy to hear that this will probably be the only Seahawk-friendly place to go here in town since the owner is from the Seattle area. I can’t vouch for your safety with the locals though. For more information, visit the FATE Brewing Company website.

West Flanders Brewing Company

Did you hear about the epic rivalry they have going on with Seattle’s Elysian Brewing Company? Let’s just say that’s not the only exciting thing they have going on during the Super Bowl. They’ll be serving their special Orange in Brew Championship Ale and will have Happy Hour prices from 4PM to close. So grab a seat, watch from any of their six big screen TV’s, and enjoy drinking the beer all of Seattle will be tasting come monday. See their Super Bowl menu for more information and prices.

Shine Restaurant and Gathering Place

Don’t let the fresh-pressed juices and organic food fool you – this place is throwing it down caveman style on Sunday. They’re hosting an all out Paleo party that comes complete with a kitchen full of chicken wings, tacos, sliders, sweet potato fries, veggies, fruits, nuts, and everything else you can eat with your hands. So eat like crazy, watch the game, and wash it all down with one of their famous potions to forget about all of the calories you just consumed. Visit Shine’s websitefor more information.

Twisted Pine Brewing Company

Twisted Pine’s great beer is well known here in Boulder. And for the big game, they’re going to let you have it a little cheaper. Stop by to enjoy $10 pitchers of their famous draft beers and $2.50 Bloody Billys, a spicy red beer. They have six TV’s throughout the bar and dining area so you’re sure to get a good view of Peyton Manning throwing it down field. Visit Twisted Pine’s website for more info.

Lazy Dog Sports Bar and Grill

If you want to drown in flat screen TV’s everywhere you look on Sunday, then this is your place. Located right in the heart of the Pearl Street Mall, Lazy Dog will have the game on and the beer flowing. Though they don’t have any specific specials for the Big Game, Happy Hour will still be in full effect and they’ll be hosting a chicken wing eating contest during halftime. Good luck!

Conor O’Neill’s

If you want to watch the Super Bowl and feel like it’s St. Patricks day at the same time, then make sure to check out Conor O’Neill’s. They have four big-screen TV’s and will have Happy Hour from 4-7PM. To sweeten the pot even more, every time the Broncos score you can get a $4 Jameson shot or an orange and blue Bronco Bomb. They’re located right off of the Pearl Street Mall on 13th street.

Dickens Tavern

Just outside of Boulder, Dickens Tavern in Longmont is hosting a charity event for their Super Bowl party. They have a $20 entry fee, but it comes complete with fully stocked Appetizer buffet filled with chicken wings, nachos, quesadillas, meatballs and Happy Hour drink prices during the game. Though they only have one TV, it’s a huge 30-foot movie screen that will make you see all of the child-like fear on the Seahawks player’s faces. They only have 300 spots available so if you’re thinking about going, make sure to call ahead and reserve your spot. All of the proceeds goes to support the local Pro Swing Softball team.

The Connection at CU

If you’re a CU student and you still don’t know where to go, try stopping by The Connection on campus for their Soup ‘R Bowl party. They have big-screen TV’s and free soup, snacks, and drinks for all those who attend. The party starts at 2PM so come early and make sure to bring your student ID. Visit their event page for more information.

No matter where you choose to watch the game, just remember to drive safe and drink responsibly.

Boulder Beer: Sanitas Brewing on the Right Side of the Tracks

Boulder Beer: Sanitas Brewing on the Right Side of the Tracks

sanitas_patio2

Open since September 2013, it’s obvious that Sanitas Brewing has already established a following. The folks you see hanging out in their Boulder taproom include beer geeks bellied up to the bar, groups of friends gathered at large tables and families with kids running around. And it’s easy to see why people enjoy Sanitas. There are games, friendly bartenders and delicious beers…what more could you want from the Boulder beer scene?

And it’s no secret – there’s no shortage of great Boulder beer. Let’s talk about what makes Sanitas special, though. The Black IPA is one of the flagship beers featured at Sanitas Brewing. It’s dark in color, loaded with piney hops and delicious. Additionally, the Sanitas Saison is an easy-drinking farmhouse ale, available year-round both in cans and on draft. The taproom also had three other Sanitas brews on tap during a recent visit, with those draft options depending on what seasonal beers the brewers have created.

sanitas_brewroom2

Sanitas has a polished industrial feeling to it. With communal wood tables and a wall of garage door windows, the place is warmer than one would expect from the office complex setting. The natural light that floods in courtesy the large windows make for a sunny and intimate view of the railroad tracks. In addition to the barroom, there’s also a conference room that’s available for rental by large groups. A $100 deposit (that goes toward the purchase of beer) is required to reserve the room.

When it comes to outdoor entertainment, Sanitas has you covered. There’s a regulation-size Bocce court out back and ample room on the large patio for other impromptu drinking games. Sanitas Brewing, fittingly enough, offers a nice view of Mount Sanitas and even closer, the railroad tracks that are right next to the brewery. Word is that when a train passes, you get a $1 off your pints. Unfortunately, they don’t know when trains will pass and somedays you have 20 going by while other days don’t see any. The brewery suffered slight damage from the flood and has more extensive landscaping planned for the upcoming summer.

Although the brewery doesn’t have a kitchen serving food, they do have a dedicated food truck in McDevitt Taco Supply. Tacos are sold daily and you can find out specific details on the Sanitas Brewing Facebook page or by following them on Twitter.

New Years, Moneypenny: The James Bond Ball at the Boulderado

New Years, Moneypenny: The James Bond Ball at the Boulderado

new years boulder

Well, that’s behind us. Christmas — we’ve all survived another year of family squabbles, food not turning out quite as we imagined, running short of one ingredient or another at the last minute, and tidings of comfort, joy, and please stop playing that music.

Your Boulder hopes you had a brilliant holiday season, no matter how you chose to celebrate. But on to more important (and apparently, covert) matters.

Years. New Years, that is.

If you’re looking to stay local this year and still live it up, The Boulderado is probably where you want to be. And while I know I’m crossing spy genres here, your mission (should you choose to accept it) is a New Years party where even the hipest of hipsters can get their swank on. It’s the James Bond Ball — and all of Boulder (and Denver) is invited.

New Years in Boulder is generally lacking for bigger, glossier parties. This year, why not blow 2013 out with a bang and hit a real party? Skip the rave at a cold warehouse where you’re only going to end up crying wearing someone else’s sweater after tripping on things that are less than legal. There are a few ways to enjoy the James Bond Ball, so here’s everything you need to know:

Music

Two live bands for the evening: Dressed in Black and The Fever.

Dinner

You can make an evening out of it with a six-course dinner. $140 per person for a community table and $175 per person for a private table. All dinner packages come with general admission to the Dance Party beginning at 8:30pm. To check out the menu for the evening (ummm, YUM), have a look here. Seatings for the community table are at 8:30pm and the private tables at 8pm. All dinner packages include a champagne toast at midnight.

If you want to book a dinner reservation, be sure to call (303) 440-2880. You canbuy tickets online for the Dance Party via Open Table (this link wasn’t working last we checked, but it said to check back — so…check back).

Dance Party

Get your best Bond and Bond Girl on and head to a rockin’ dance party at the most elegant destination in town. Tickets are $85 (inclusive of a 20% service charge) and include access to the dance party along with “Bond Bites” to keep your stomach from rebelling when you’ve had one too many shaken (not stirred) martinis. Per the Hotel Boulderado website, doors open at 8:30pm and the party runs until 1am — or until you stumble home to sleep it off.

Sleeping it Off

You could just stay at the Hotel Boulderado. They have an overnight package for $249 that includes a room, 2 tickets to the dance party, and valet parking. To purchase this package, call (303) 442-4344. Seems wise to sleep it off where you plan to party it up.

Whatever your plans for the New Year, we’re wishing all of Boulder a grand celebration in whatever style you choose. Stay safe, and as always, stay Boulder.

Restaurants in Boulder That Are Open on Christmas Day

Boulder Restaurants Open on Christmas Day

Oh, Boulder — you and your hustle and bustle. Christmas is right around the corner and it seems like everyone is running around getting last minute errands done in the light dusting of snow that we got last night.

For many people, Christmas is a day spent in pajamas, with very little thought given to even venturing outside for more than an afternoon run or dog walk. But for others, Christmas Day is a time to get together with friends and celebrate the relationships that the past year has brought into their lives.

But perhaps this year in Boulder has been hectic. You’re ready to call it but you’re not ready to call it and go hungry.

So, where do you go in Boulder for a nice Christmas meal — and cocktail, if so inclined? Well, if your quest for sustenance and celebration is beyond your front door tomorrow, this article is for you in particular. While many Boulder restaurantsare closed on Christmas Day, a select few remain open and even offer special meals for those coming in to dine on Christmas. Boulder’s Best Burgers

Boulder’s Best Burgers

Mountain Sun Date Night Burger

We cover a lot of vegetarian and vegan options here on Your Boulder, but what about those of us who just want a nice, delicious, juicy burger? You know … cooked to perfection (rare or well-done, whatever your perfect looks like, I won’t judge) with toppings that make you drool just thinking about it?

Boulder’s has many burger joints that will fill your craving for meat on a bun. Here are just a few of the favorites from around town:

Reuben’s Burger Bistro

We’ve extolled the virtues of this burger joint before, but it’s worth it to point them out again. The burgers here are roll your eyes into the back of your head good and the cycling-themed names are always fun to throw around the table when deciding what to order. They burgers are forget-your-table-manners good. Plus, having them served on a pretzel bun makes them even more delicious. On top of that,Reuben’s serves up a fantastic selection of Belgian beer, so you can get the fanciest possible combination of a burger and a beer.

Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery

Once again, another fantastic place in Boulder to snag a burger and a craft beer. These beers are even made onsite! Fans of the Mountain Sun burgers say that Date Night Burger or the Junk Burger are the way to go (though, if you’re feel like a fiesta, the pollo asado burrito is equally amazing). If you’ve got friends that are meat averse, the Mountain Sun offers plenty of vegetarian options to keep them happy while you scarf down your burger.

The Sink

This place has been a staple on The Hill since before most of the residents of Boulder were even born. Of course, it’s had its share of different owners, but right now, it one of the great places to get a burger just off campus. If you want a classic burger that dates back to when Robert Redford worked at The Sink (true story), get the Sink Burger. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Drakes Haus

Two words: Merlot Burger. These aren’t your average, run of the mill burgers. They aren’t even they average size! Drakes Haus burgers are slightly smaller than an average sized burger, but slightly bigger than a slider. They have an offer for two burgers for $8 and when you see the offerings that they have, you’ll be ever so thankful for the ability to eat two burger choices.

West End Tavern

This place has been around for about 25 years and it’s had its ups and downs. Right now, however, is a definite up. This place not only has delicious, mouthwatering burgers, but a rooftop patio that’s just wonderful on a sunny spring, summer or fall (or winter, knowing Colorado weather) day. The West End is a good place to grab a bite before a night out on the town, or just sit and hang out with friends all night long.

Afternoon (Holiday) Tea at Boulder’s St. Julien

Afternoon (Holiday) Tea at Boulder’s St. Julien

st julien boulder gingerbread tea

Have you been to tea at the St. Julien on Walnut Street? As one of Boulder’s swankiest mainstays, you’ve probably been to Jill’s for breakfast. You’ve grabbed a post-work cocktail at their bar for happy hour with your bestest of best work buddies. Maybe you stuck around long enough to hear some jazz in the lobby or mingle outdoors in the courtyard in summertime.

But why not step inside for a cuppa Boulder-style holiday hot this winter and book a tea (not tee) time at the St. Julien Hotel?

For the holiday season, they’re offering their signature Gingerbread Teas featuring teas by Tea Forté. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit Boulder-based There With Care, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting families and childrenfacing critical illnesses. You can ease into a comfy chair and listen to the twinkling ivories of Grammy-winning pianist Ralph Sharon and his accompanying trio, accompanied by your own aromatic and warm cup of tea.

The tea spread includes scones, petit fours, and tea sandwiches to tide your tummy over until your weekend holiday meal. You can view the entire tea menu here.

And it’s not just for the grown-ups. Bring the kids and let them try their hand at decorating gingerbread cookies — definitely fun and always a non-denominational type of tasty.

Teas at the St. Julien are held every Saturday and Sunday through December 22nd, with seatings at 12:00 pm, 12:15 pm, 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm, 2:15 pm, 2:30 pm. It’s $29.95 for adults and the kiddos come along for only $19.95 (decorating the gingerbread cookies is included!). You can make reservations online at OpenTable or simply call the hotel at 720-406-8208.

Centro: A Boulder Gem and Delicious Destination

Centro: A Boulder Gem and Delicious Destination

By  www.YourBoulder.com

Centro Boulder

Where can you go for brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks and feel completely at the heart of the downtown Boulder scene? Where is it not too stuffy, but buttoned up enough to avoid the riff raff of dive bars with bad food? My vote is Centro.

Centro is the quintessential night-out in Boulder jump-off. They’re truly hit the sweet spot in bringing tasty latin food together with memorable cocktails. They’re also extremely popular, so if you want a seat on the patio, inside or anywhere, for that matter, get there early. No, not 5:30PM early. More like, make up an excuse to your boss on why you need to leave work at 4:30PM kind of early.

It’s always a gamble if you and your friends are going to get a seat at Centro, especially for happy hour. This is truly a testament to how good they are and how consistent they are with providing an enjoyable ambiance. The happy hour menu is affordable and easy to order from, with the shrimp tacos being a favorite.

Centro Boulder Scenery

The beer and wine specials are standard for Boulder, but what you absolutely must try are Centro’s Margaritas. All are made with mezcal or 100% agave tequila and come in varieties that range from sweet to savory to spicy as hell. The “Hot Rosser” comes highly recommended which is made with Zapopan tequila, lemon juice, orange juice, strawberry puree and spicy fresno chiles.

Sometimes getting a seat at Boulder’s busiest restaurants is a pain, but more often than not, it’s a cherished accomplishment when you manage to get seated at Centro. The food rarely disappoints and you’re not rushed out once you do sit down and start imbibing. Use good sense and strategy in getting to Centro early and you won’t be disappointed.
