Ultimate Boulder Beer and Craft Brewery Guide

Ultimate Boulder Beer and Craft Brewery Guide

Boulder craft beer and breweries

In Boulder, you don’t have to wait for Colorado Craft Beer Week to have an excuse to go brewery hopping, it’s an every day event! Whether you just want to try a new beer or sit down and have a meal, we’ve got you covered. Below are some of the most popular Boulder beer purveyors, along with craft breweries for your hops-laden pleasure.

Brewery Restaurants/Pubs

If you are in the mood for a sit down restaurant or pub with some Boulder beer, then the places below should be just your speed.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse – Even though it’s a national chain, and doesn’t have the best reviews, BJ’s still has a nice size following in Boulder. If you’re looking for a typical American sit-down restaurant that makes its own brew, then this is your spot. Maybe a good place to take the parents while in from out of town if they’re craving something more “chain restaurant.”

Boulder Beer Brewery – As Colorado’s first microbrewery, Boulder Beer has been supplying the thirsty of people of Boulder with craft beer since 1979. Since then, it has grown into a full-fledged restaurant and bar with abundant indoor and gorgeous outdoor patio seating. If it’s your first time there, make sure to try their famous Hazed & Infused and Buffalo Gold brews.

Bru – Located right in the heart of the “Brewmuda Triangle”, Bru has perfected the art of craft beer and food pairing. Not only do they brew their own beer, but they also have plenty of unique food options that pair together perfectly. If you’re up for a nice surprise, check out their Citrum IPA or Loch Wee Heavy Scotch Ale.

FATE Brewing Company – With handcrafted microbrews and chef-inspired eats, FATE is quickly becoming one of the most popular brewery/restaurants in Boulder. Not only can they brag about being the first brew-bistro in town, they have over 30 beers on tap and an extensive food menu that offers options for the whole family.

Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery – This is a true craft brew and restaurant staple here in Boulder. With two daily happy hours and friendly low-key vibes, you can see why Mountain Sun is one of the most popular places for the locals to enjoy some good food and local beer. If you happen to be in South Boulder, make sure to check out their sister restaurant, Southern Sun Pub & Brewery. No matter which one you go to, just remember to bring cash since they don’t except credit cards. There’s an ATM in the back of both locations if you forget!

Walnut Brewery – With two Great American Beer Festival winning beers, the St. James Irish Red Ale and the Old Elk Brown Ale, it’s not hard to see why Walnut Brewery has been a downtown Boulder brewery restaurant staple for years.

West Flanders Brewing Company – Located right in the middle of Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, West Flanders is a great place to have nice pint of craft beer and a bite to eat. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends, but that never stops people from dropping in and enjoying a delicious brew burger and a Trippel Lutz or Angry Monk with friends.

Straight-Up Breweries

Even though most of the places listed below do have food, they offer more of a brewery-type atmosphere than their restaurant/pub counterparts like those listed above.

Asher Brewing Company – For those interested in sustainability and organic ingredients, Asher takes the cake. Their brewery and tasting room is 100% wind powered and their beer ingredients are USDA Certified Organic. For those who don’t care about any of that and just want to drink some good craft beer, try their Green Lantern Organic Kolsch and Tree Hugger Organic Amber.

Avery Brewing – Nestled in quiet location in East Boulder, Avery is one of the most popular breweries in Boulder, and rightly so. With over 20 craft brews on tap, daily tours, and awesome finger food to keep you going, Avery Brewing has definitely earned its stripes as not only one of the best breweries in Boulder, but in the country.

J Wells Brewery – Is the smallest nanobrewery in Boulder. The owner, Jamie Wells, was strongly influenced by the IPA beers of the West Coast and the malty beers of England. J Wells also specializes in serving some standout IPA, Pale Ale, and British bitter craft beers.

Sanitas Brewing Co. – This growing brewery is quickly becoming a household name here in Boulder. They have a large 3-season outdoor patio and brewery tours are available upon request. Also, in an act of friendly competition and neighborly love, they recently teamed up with Boulder Beer Brewery to create a new and unique brew. Dubbed the Boulder Common, this new brew blends together original American style beer with modern India Pale Ale to create a great easy going beer.

The Kettle and Stone Brewing Company – When the founders of a place bring 15 years of experience working at breweries such as Mountain Sun and Oskar Blues, you know you have a winner on your hands. When you stop by, make sure to check out their Freedom Stout and Momentum IPA. If you prefer a non-alcoholic option, try their famous Ginger Ale.

Twisted Pine Brewing Company – Even though I would categorize Twisted Pine as more of a brewery than a restaurant, this place has enough craft beer and food for everyone. With beer names like Hoppy Boy IPA and Ghost Face Killah, it’s no wonder why Twisted Pine is a favorite with the locals. If you’re up for spice, grab a Billy’s Chilies (whoa).

Upslope Brewing Company – Orange can, anyone? Upslope has made a huge splash to the Boulder brewery scene since they first opened their doors in back in 2008. A splash so big, in fact, that they recently opened a huge new taproom in East Boulder in addition to their flagship North Boulder location. They hand craft all of their brews in small batches and is one of the only breweries that use true authentic Patagonian hops.

Wild Woods Brewery – With wooden tables and tree branches as their décor, Wild Woods’s handcrafted beer is truly inspired by the outdoors. They’re a snappy small-batch local brewery with great tasting beer. Make sure to try their Ponderosa Porter and Smores Stout.

Boulder’s craft brewery scene continues to grow and offer more amazing beer options for craft beer lovers everywhere. Make sure to vote on your favorites and offer any new suggestions in comment section below.

Boulder County Farmers Market is OPEN!

Boulder County Farmers Market is OPEN!

boulder county farmers market

This means that spring is really here, right? No more freak snow. No more icy sidewalks unless your son just happened to have dropped a popsicle.

It’s official: the Boulder County Farmers Market is OPEN for 2014! And yeah, we missed the grand opening by a few weeks (we’ve been traveling, writing about BBQ…you know, important stuff). But if you missed it like we did, it’s time to grab those reusable shopping totes and head on down this Saturday to the Boulder County Farmers Market. There’s good gettin’ to be gotten and it’s just the beginning of the season.

If you’re new to Boulder, you can hit up the farmers market every Saturday from 8AM until 2PM. There’s also a sister farmers market in Longmont held on Saturdays from 8AM to 1PM. The Boulder location is on 13th Street between Arapahoe and Canyon, adjacent to Boulder’s Central Park. The Longmont market is held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds on Nelson Road. You can check out hours, locations, and maps right here.

And if you’re wondering about the kinds of treasures you can expect to find at the market, you can see an entire list of this year’s vendors right on the farmers market website. They list everything from the vendor’s name to the vendor’s website if they have one. This way, you can do a little pre-sleuthing prior to your trip, plot your shopping trip, and see if your favorite vendors have returned for the 2014 season.

And parking can be a beast for farmers market days. We recommend walking and bikes, but you can also park in one of the many City of Boulder parking facilities. Just note that you will be paying the ful parking rate because lots aren’t free on Saturdays.

We’ll see you at the market! Happy shopping.

Shine on at Boulder’s Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place

Shine on at Boulder’s Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place

shine-logo3

Billed as more than just a restaurant, but also a community gathering place, Shinehas held true to the vision of the triplets that opened it just two years ago in the heart of downtown Boulder. The women had a prior hit in the Boulder restaurant scene when they ran Trilogy for many years, located just next door to Shine’s current location.

This space feels more grown up, with healthier food options, lots of potent elixirs and beer brewed in-house. In addition to the delicious food and drinks, there is free yoga night, music in the back room, and many opportunities to get involved in the Boulder scene.

Open for lunch and dinner daily, Shine also offers daily happy hours and brunch on the weekends. All their food is made with local organic products and the kitchen is completely gluten-free. With dishes like pulled pork, coconut curry, and cauliflower mashers, carnivores and vegetarians alike can find something to satisfy on Shine’s menu. And if you’re looking for beer, Shine has gluten-free varieties as well along with all the varieties of beer they brew directly on premises. The restaurant’s fantastic location near 13th and Pearl makes it an easy stop if you’re looking for a nosh downtown or need a place to get a drink before a show at theBoulder Theater.

The triplets have scored again with Shine’s ambiance. The restaurant exudes warmth from the minute you walk in. With large ceilings, an open dining room / bar combination and yellow walls featuring the mural of a large tree, there are many elements that contribute to that feeling. There’s a meeting space in the back of the restaurant and a sitting lounge in the middle with smaller tables for a bit more privacy.

From dance parties to open mics to trunk shows, Shine is intent on becoming a place where just about anything can happen in the back room. Boulder needs spaces like this so that the community can grow stronger and different people can have the opportunity to come together. Be sure to check out the calendar on Shine’s site or follow them on Twitter to find out more about the daily specials and what’s going down in their gathering space.

Boulder’s Best Burgers

Boulder’s Best Burgers

Mountain Sun Date Night Burger

We cover a lot of vegetarian and vegan options here on Your Boulder, but what about those of us who just want a nice, delicious, juicy burger? You know … cooked to perfection (rare or well-done, whatever your perfect looks like, I won’t judge) with toppings that make you drool just thinking about it?

Boulder’s has many burger joints that will fill your craving for meat on a bun. Here are just a few of the favorites from around town:

Reuben’s Burger Bistro

We’ve extolled the virtues of this burger joint before, but it’s worth it to point them out again. The burgers here are roll your eyes into the back of your head good and the cycling-themed names are always fun to throw around the table when deciding what to order. They burgers are forget-your-table-manners good. Plus, having them served on a pretzel bun makes them even more delicious. On top of that,Reuben’s serves up a fantastic selection of Belgian beer, so you can get the fanciest possible combination of a burger and a beer.

Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery

Once again, another fantastic place in Boulder to snag a burger and a craft beer. These beers are even made onsite! Fans of the Mountain Sun burgers say that Date Night Burger or the Junk Burger are the way to go (though, if you’re feel like a fiesta, the pollo asado burrito is equally amazing). If you’ve got friends that are meat averse, the Mountain Sun offers plenty of vegetarian options to keep them happy while you scarf down your burger.

The Sink

This place has been a staple on The Hill since before most of the residents of Boulder were even born. Of course, it’s had its share of different owners, but right now, it one of the great places to get a burger just off campus. If you want a classic burger that dates back to when Robert Redford worked at The Sink (true story), get the Sink Burger. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Drakes Haus

Two words: Merlot Burger. These aren’t your average, run of the mill burgers. They aren’t even they average size! Drakes Haus burgers are slightly smaller than an average sized burger, but slightly bigger than a slider. They have an offer for two burgers for $8 and when you see the offerings that they have, you’ll be ever so thankful for the ability to eat two burger choices.

West End Tavern

This place has been around for about 25 years and it’s had its ups and downs. Right now, however, is a definite up. This place not only has delicious, mouthwatering burgers, but a rooftop patio that’s just wonderful on a sunny spring, summer or fall (or winter, knowing Colorado weather) day. The West End is a good place to grab a bite before a night out on the town, or just sit and hang out with friends all night long.

Where’s Santa? Places to Find Santa Around Boulder County

Where’s Santa? Places to Find Santa Around Boulder County

santa in boulder

The holiday season is upon us. Christmas lights are flooding the streets with every color imaginable and lawn decorations to boot. Of course, if you’re a parent, there’s one tradition you aren’t going to want to miss this year: the annual visit with Santa Claus.

In Boulder, there are several locations where you can take your kiddos to tell Santa exactly what they want for Christmas. Each location has a great theme and offers children something more than just a jolly man in a red suit.

Below are the places you can find Santa in Boulder for the next few weeks:

St. Nick on the Bricks – This Santa sighting takes place on the Pearl Street Mall at the visitor’s information center every Saturday until December 18th, from 11 am to 2 pm. The visit is free and they don’t offer photos, so be sure to bring your camera along with you to capture the moment.

Santa’s House – Hosted at the Pi Beta Phi sorority house at 890 11th Street, this weekend long event is more than just a quick visit with Santa. Kids can play carnival games and listens to stories told by Miss Ann Harding, a professional children’s entertainer. Both Santa and the missus will be there on December 7 and 8 from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $3 and the sorority is collecting donations for Community Food Share and Books for Children.

Miracle on 29th Street – Santa comes to the 29th Street Mall on Saturdays the 7th, 14th and 21st and kids visiting Santa here can also meet his reindeer and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride. The carriage rides are available from 5-8 pm and the reindeer are available for petting from 6-8 pm. Santa himself will be inside Macy’s.

Santa’s Holiday Home – Located in the Flatiron Crossing Mall, this location is a little ways out from Boulder proper, but still offers your children a great opportunity to visit Santa (and you can get some Santa shopping done at the same time). Plus, they have a unique, time-saving option: the Santa Fly By program, in which you can sign up for the virtual visit line via phone, text or web. You’ll get a wait time and then you can simply come back when it’s about your turn. Santa’s home is located between Helzberg Diamonds and Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory at the base of the grand staircase.

Family Fun: December in Boulder

Family Fun: December in Boulder

holiday_downtown

December in Boulder can mean three-feet blizzards or sunburns caused by daily temperatures in the 50’s. It’s pretty much all over the map. But when it comes toholiday activities and quality time spent as a family, we tend to veer towards the traditional.

  • A Christmas Carol, The Musical. This rendition of the Broadway hit is playing until December 22nd at the Arvada Center.

  • Menorah Lighting on the Pearl Street Mall. A community wide event happening on the Courthouse Lawn on December 2nd at 5:30pm.

  • The Bells of Christmas, Colorado Repertory Singers. Show starts at 6pm at the Broomfield Auditorium.

  • Lights of December Parade, Downtown Boulder. The parade snakes through the heart of town, with kids of all ages riding floats and watching from the sidelines. This holiday spectacle starts at 6pm on December 7th. Beware street closures that night and stay out of downtown unless you want to get caught up in the fun.

  • Scrooge’s Holiday Flight, Dairy Center for the Arts. This aerial twist on a Christmas classic is done by the Frequent Flyers’ Student Company and runs from Dec. 6th-8th.

  • Holiday Festival, Macky Auditorium. A concert to get you in the holiday mood, these shows frequently sell out so be sure to get your tickets early. Performances happen on December 7th and 8th

  • Holidazical, Hotel Boulderado. This family-friendly event is put on by the YWCA. Cookie decorating and other activities start at 12:30pm on December 8th.

  • The Magic Flute, Boulder Opera Company. Playing at the Nomad Theater in Boulder with multiple shows on December 13th and December 15th.

  • The Christmas Revels 2013: Christmas Spirits & the Ghosts of Bartow-Pell, Boulder Theater. Set in 1926, this is a period piece that incorporates musical elements of both Christmas and winter solstice rituals. Performing on December 15th and 21st.

  • The Gift of Music, Boulder Chamber Orchestra. Featuring David Korevaar on piano, this concert takes place at the First United Methodist Church on December 20th

  • Christmas Fantasy for Brass and Voices, Rocky Mountain Brassworks. See this brass band live at the Broomfield Auditorium on December 21st.

Consider yourself prepared for some holiday fun. Now don’t be a Scrooge. You have no excuse not to go out there and enjoy the season already!

Vegan Restaurants in Boulder

Vegan Restaurants in Boulder

Vegan Restaurants in Boulder

Making the decision to become a vegan is a big deal. Whatever your reasons for making the lifestyle change are, it means that sometimes you’re frequently left eating the veggie tray with hummus anytime to go out to dinner with friends, leaving you hangry for the rest of the evening.

Lucky for you though, you live in Boulder, which is a fairly vegan-friendly city for people who are committed to their dietary choices, but still love eating out. Here’s a list of some of the great places to find vegan food in Boulder (note: this is not, by any means exhaustive, so if you have a place you love, please feel free to add it in the comments).

Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant

If you’re looking for an upscale evening in a restaurant that understands the needs of vegetarians and vegans alike, Leaf is a great place to dine. The meals are creative and satisfying and you can most certainly get enough to eat. The menu, which is filled with mouth-watering season dishes, is clearly marked with vegan, gluten-free and raw items (Jamaican Jerk Tempeh, need I say more?).

Native Foods

Want to eschew the meat eaters and hit up a place where all the food is vegan? Then head over to Native Foods. This place is a fast-casual business model, so it’s easy to drop in for lunch or a quick dinner. The entire menu is vegan, so you don’t even have to think twice about ordering anything on the menu, which is very extensive, from starters to sandwiches and even dessert.

Julia’s Kitchen

This little café just off of Broadway and Violet is 100% vegan and gluten-free! AtJulia’s Kitchen, the menu is all plant-based and you can get something for any meal of the day, from buckwheat pancakes to kitchari. It’s a little bit pricey, but fans rave that the food is worth it.

Sun Deli & Liquor

This one is a little hidden next to an apartment complex on Pearl and you’ve likely driven past it a dozen times without realizing the amazing vegan options they offer. Next time, don’t drive by; instead, stop in for a pizza or a sandwich. Virtually half the menu at Sun Deli is offered both as a meat or vegan option. Yes, your omnivore friends can join you here and you won’t have to listen to them complain about a lack of meat on the menu.

Boulder Baked

Even vegans get the munchies for sweet satisfaction. Boulder Baked delivers (literally) with a wide range of vegan desserts. The added bonus: they deliver until midnight, so you can still fulfill that late night craving without compromising thedietary guidelines that you’re committed to.

We also discovered several Nepalese restaurants that offer great vegan buffets once a week. Nepal Cuisine on Table Mesa offers an all vegan lunch buffet on Mondays from 11-3 and Himalayas has a vegan dinner buffet on Wednesday evenings.

Things to Do in Boulder with Kids

Things to Do in Boulder with Kids

If you’re traveling to Boulder with little ones in tow, you’ll have no problem finding ways to entertain them.

The Pearl Street Mall, in particular, has endless diversions for kids, including fascinating street performers and strategically placed play areas for children. Judging by the squeals of delight you’ll hear as you get near the pop-jet fountain at Pearl and 14th Street, this may get the kids’ vote for best Boulder attraction. Water shoots up randomly from spouts in the pavement as little ones scamper through.

A rock garden with big boulders perfect for scrambling on, hiding behind and sitting atop is another popular spot and is located between 13th Street and Broadway. Similarly, a collection of sculptures between 14th and 15th streets is irresistible to children who like to climb on a giant stone snail and other oversized creatures.

Plenty of downtown businesses cater to kids, too. Into the Wind kite and toyshop is positively overflowing with clever trinkets that will keep your little ones intrigued for hours. Color Me Mine offers a chance for them to get creative as they paint their own pottery. And Momentum, a shop specializing in responsibly sourced goods, has a kids’ corner for reading and playing while mom and dad shop.

Of course, outside of Boulder’s downtown area are plenty of activities for kids, many of which offer learning alongside fun. The Wonder of Science at Twenty Ninth Street offers an interactive learning area with large-scale lighted models of the planets, a weather reporting station, a 35-foot tall sounding rocket and more. The Underwater Fish Observatory along the Boulder Creek behind Millennium Harvest House is an opportunity for kids to peek in on fish swimming in their natural environment. And the Boulder History Museum’s Discovery Room is a hands-on kids’ component to the current exhibitions.

Of course, if it’s just good old-fashioned playtime you want, consider Gateway Park Fun Center in North Boulder. Kids of all ages will be swept up in the mini golf course, go-karts, batting cages, human maze, an indoor arcade and more.
